About Me

Bérince Hounsouvo is a Ph.D. candidate in Forest Sciences at Université Laval, under the supervision of Professor Damase P. Khasa and Professor Antoine Karam. His current research focuses on the selection of boreal tree species with a lateral root system for the revegetation of mining sites that generate acid mine drainage (AMD). In this context, he is studying the influence of genetic and environmental factors on the root systems of black spruce and tamarack to guide the sustainable restoration practices for AMD-affected mining sites in Quebec.

Holder of a master’s degree in forestry from the University of Parakou (Benin), Bérince previously served as a project manager for ecological restoration with the Environment Plan ONG in Benin (2021-2023). He has over seven years experience in forest biology and ecological restoration projects. Moreover, Bérince is a young leader who is committed to the development of his community. Since September 2024, he has been an Ambassador for One Young World, where he connects with other young leaders from around the world, exchanges solutions, and learns from shared experiences. He is also the President of the Environment Plan NGO, a role through which he directly leads concrete actions in biodiversity conservation and the restoration of natural habitats.
